Right after I ended my maternity leave, I had the pleasure of doing my best friend’s daughter’s cake smash photos in the studio! Photographing Lainey & Madelyn’s cake smash in the studio was the best way to be back to photographing. 🙂

Before any cake smash session, we always start out with just some portraits (ya know.. before the pre-cake mess LOL) which is what we did.

Cake Smash Photos + Crazy Toddlers 🤣

Once thing to know about milestone or cake smash sessions… your toddler will be EVERYWHERE. Whether they’re walking or only crawling still, they will be all over the studio! And that is completely ok with me. I always move where they move and try to keep up while still catching their smiles!

If they wonder outside the area we’re shooting, I always wrangle them back to where they need to go. However, often times during cake smash photos with shy kiddos, parents often need to step-in to help me with this. I never want to upset a baby by a stranger picking them up to move them of course!

While in the studio, there is always a variety of props (chairs, stools, baskets, blankets) to use. But parents are always welcome to bring additional props, balloons or decorations if they prefer.

After the first half of the session where these girlies went wild crawling around the studio – we then introduced the cake!

Now, I warned Kim (Mom to these two) beforehand – some kids really don’t care about the cake during these sessions. It always surprises me when kids don’t act interested in their cake! However, for one year olds – it is probably very overwhelming when you haven’t tried cake very many times, have a stranger with a camera photographing you, and everyone pressuring you to smash it (which, when have they ever been allowed to do that? LOL)

HOWEVER – these girls proved me sooo wrong! Madelyn immediately dove in so quick (to the point I missed when she first dove forward!!) lol. They both LOVED their cake, ate plenty of frosting and had such a great time during their session. We had some clean up to do afterwards, but it was so worth it and so much fun!

After a cake smash session, I never expect parents to clean up. That’s my job! However, so many parents insist on helping me anyway. 🙂

Cake smash sessions are held in South Bend in the studio, always meant to be relaxed and easy for parents, and you walk away with such cute photographs to celebrate your baby’s first birthday.
