A Beautiful Lakeside Proposal in New Buffalo, Michigan

A few weeks ago, I had the honor of photographing one of the sweetest surprise proposals in New Buffalo, Michigan for Garrett and Katherine. As a New Buffalo proposal photographer, getting to capture moments like this is always so special to me. There is just something so emotional and exciting about documenting such a huge moment in someone’s story.

Leading up to the proposal, Garrett and I connected a few times over the phone to go over all the details and make sure everything went smoothly. Planning a surprise proposal always takes a little teamwork, and the staff at The Harbor Grand were incredibly helpful throughout the entire process. They helped everything fall perfectly into place for this unforgettable evening.

Planning a Surprise Proposal in New Buffalo

One thing I always tell couples planning a proposal is that communication and preparation make such a big difference. Garrett had a clear vision for the moment, and together we planned out exactly where I would stand and how everything would unfold. Having a plan ahead of time helped everything feel natural and stress-free once the moment finally arrived.

A Lakeside Proposal at The Harbor Grand

Garrett and Katherine had dinner together before heading outside for a walk near the lake. While they were walking, I stayed nearby and ready with my camera, waiting for the perfect moment. The lakeside setting in New Buffalo made the proposal feel even more romantic. Between the peaceful water, the soft evening light, and the excitement of the moment, it could not have been more beautiful.

When Garrett got down on one knee, Katherine was completely surprised. I was able to discreetly photograph the proposal at a distance as it happened naturally, capturing all of the genuine emotions and reactions in real time. Those candid moments are always some of my favorite images to document as a New Buffalo engagement photographer because they tell such a meaningful story.

After they took a few moments to soak everything in and celebrate together, we spent some time taking engagement-style portraits around the property and by the water. One of my favorite things about proposal sessions is that couples leave not only with photos of the proposal itself, but also with beautiful portraits to remember this season of life.
