In-home lifestyle newborn photography sessions are one of my favorite type of sessions. I definitely get so excited when a mom messages me and asks to book one of these.

The Morgan family welcomed their sweet baby girl back in December. They also welcomed me into their home, in Goshen, Indiana shortly after to capture these newborn photos, family photos, and sibling photos.

For this in home lifestyle newborn photography session, we started in baby’s nursery (which is actually big sister’s nursery still!)

I almost always start out with a standard family portrait. Especially when toddlers are involved in the photography session. Toddlers are excited (and usually nervous) to meet me or see me again. They are typically taking it all in and are in a good mood when the photography session first starts. If they are in high spirits, I want to take advantage of that right off the bat and knock out one posed family photo while we can. Obviously, doesn’t always happen. But I’d say 80% of the time, it does. 🙂

After getting that family portrait, we then moved on to some different arrangements in the baby’s nursery.

For lifestyle newborn photos, my goal is to keep every family as comfortable as they can be. As a Mom of two, I understand how those first few weeks after welcoming a newborn baby home can feel hectic. Now you also have a photographer coming!? Sounds like a nightmare!

However, have no fear. As I said, I’m a mom. I get it. I don’t ever want any family to feel things have to be perfect when I show up. In-fact, it would be weird if they were!

This being said – the Morgan family honestly were pretty perfect for their photos. Their house is beautiful and they were all so put together. I know I was NOT this put together after I had either of my babies!

You have a toddler and a newborn? I’m sure you feel stressed about your newborn family photos. But have no fear. I’m not just there to document baby! This is about big brother/sister, too! What a special time to document their fun age, this new sibling bond, your home as it is in this moment. Your family and lives won’t always look like this. Soak it in and take the photos. You’ll want them later. <3

And as I mentioned, when I am doing photos of newborn babies with siblings involved, I always want to make sure to include them as much as possible in the photography session. After all, the baby won’t even know I’m there. But big sister or brother does. Plus, it’s about them too!

AND as a mom to a toddler, I know that fruit snack breaks are a MUST during photo sessions!

To summarize: in home lifestyle newborn photography sessions can probably make you feel anxious. However, I want to reassure you that it should be the opposite. Staying home and having a photographer come to you can be so much less-stress than packing everyone up in the car.

Don’t do the dishes, don’t worry about messes. I don’t care about those things and won’t be photographing them! I’ll be photographing you and your family. We can move the messes for photos, I can wait while baby finishes nursing, or the toddler spilled something on their clothes, or whatever it may be. My goal is for every client of mine to feel comfort and at ease when I am photographing them.
